funny how uncomplaining soldiers are heroes but those who have a gripe, legitimate or not, are ridiculed.

All anyone talked about is his getting shot down & being a POW. No one mentioned his staying there BY CHOICE because others weren't freed first. Maybe
not a hero, but how many here would stay knowing the types of torture which would continue when he stayed? Well, maybe not a hero, but more guts shown than
MOST of the politicians around today, at least.

Oh give me a break Lou. Many would talk their heads off to not get beaten or tortured and I can't say as I would blame them but that would not make ME a
hero either. Just a survivor. And all anyone on TV is talking about is that he is a "HERO". If I came back and got assigned to another area (since I
was getting a steady paycheck every month not to mention because of my new hero status, full medical without long waiting lines" I might stay in the
military also. He has been praised and built up to something he really isn't since he got home. Did he survive and was he uncomfortable and possibly
tortured, sure. Just like hundreds of thousands of others over the years. Did those survivors come home to be classified as a hero? NO! They were survivors.
Before people start saying that I am against the military let me remind all that I have had family that has faught in every war this country has had, except this one. My family has died and sacrificed as much as many and I fully respect every man/woman that has given their time to the service of our Country. I hold none of them responsibile for the mess they got involved in. It is the Generals and the Commanders that decide what these great men/women must do next. My maiden name is in the records of Congress from 1886 when a member of my family served on the first Steel Ship commissioned by the Navy. So don't assume I am against the military because I don't think that a surviving POW is a hero. |

John
McCain's capture and imprisonment began on October 26, 1967. He was flying his twenty-third bombing mission over North Vietnam, when his A-4E Skyhawk was shot down by a missile over Hanoi.[33][34] McCain fractured both arms and a leg, and then nearly drowned, when he parachuted into Trúc Bạch Lake in Hanoi.[33] After he regained consciousness, a crowd attacked
him, crushed his shoulder with a rifle butt, and bayoneted him;[33] he was then transported to Hanoi's main Hoa Lo Prison, nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton".[34]
Although McCain was badly wounded, his captors refused to treat his injuries, instead beating and interrogating him to get information.[36] Only when the North Vietnamese discovered that his father was a top admiral did they give him medical care[36] and announce his capture. His status as a prisoner of war (POW) made the front pages of The New York Times[37] and The Washington Post.[38] McCain spent six weeks in the hospital while receiving marginal care.[33] Now having lost 50 pounds (23 kg), in a chest cast, and with his hair turned white,[33] McCain was sent to a different camp on the outskirts of Hanoi[39] in December 1967, into a cell with two other Americans who did not expect him to live a week.[40] In March 1968, McCain was put into solitary confinement, where he would remain for two years.[41] |

What harm does it cause if some people consider him a hero?
