Consider these few Qur'anic verses...
  • "As for those who are slain in the cause of God, He will not allow their works to perish. ... He will admit them to the Paradise He has made known to them." (47:4-6)
  • "Let those who would exchange the life of this world for the hereafter, fight for the cause of God; whether he dies or triumphs, We shall richly reward him. ... The true believers fight for the cause of God, but the infidels fight for the devil. Fight then against the friends of Satan ..." (4:74,76)
  • "The believers who stay at home--apart from those that suffer a grave impediment--are not the equals of those who fight for the cause of God with their goods and their persons. God has given those that fight with their goods and their persons a higher rank than those who stay at home ..." (4:95,96)
  • "Slay the idolaters wherever you find them. ... lie in ambush everywhere for them. If they repent and take to prayer and render the alms levy, allow them to go their way ..." (9:5)
  • "Those that make war against God and His apostle and spread disorder in the land shall be put to death or crucified or have their hands and feet cut off on alternate sides, or be banished from the land. They shall be held up to shame in this world and sternly punished in the hereafter: except those that repent before you reduce them ..." (5:34,35)
  • "Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme" (8:39)
  • "Prophet, rouse the faithful to arms. If there are twenty steadfast men among you, they shall vanquish two hundred; and if there are a hundred, they shall rout a thousand unbelievers, for they are devoid of understanding." (8:65)
  • "Fight against such of those to whom the Scriptures were given ... and do not embrace the true Faith, until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued." (9:29)

And then consider these, among hundreds and hundreds of others: http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/cruelty/long.html

Leviticus

  1. If you upset God, he'll cause the land to vomit you out. 18:25
  2. "Whosoever shall commit any of these abominations ... shall be cut off from among their people." 18:29, 19:8
  3. Don't eat sacrifices on the third day or God will cut you off from among your people. 19:6-8
  4. Kill anyone who "gives his seed" to Molech. If you refuse, God will cut you and your family off. 20:2-5
  5. "For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall surely be put to death." Couldn't we try spanking first? 20:9
  6. Both parties in adultery shall be executed. 20:10
  7. If a man has sex with his father's wife, kill them both. 20:11
  8. If a man "lies" with his daughter-in-law, then both must be killed. 20:12
  9. If a man has sex with another man, kill them both. 20:13
  10. If you "lie" with your wife and your mother-in-law (now that sounds fun!), then all three of you must be burned to death. 20:14
  11. If a man or woman "lie with a beast" both the person and the poor animal are to be killed. 20:15-16
  12. People with "familiar spirits" (witches, fortune tellers, etc.) are to be stoned to death. 20:27
  13. A priest's daughter who "plays the whore" is to be burned to death. 21:9
  14. God gives us more instructions on killing and burning animals. I guess the first nine chapters of Leviticus wasn't enough. He says we must do this because he really likes the smell -- it is "a sweet savour unto the Lord." 23:12-14, 18
  15. Don't do any work on the day of atonement or God will destroy you. 23:29-30
  16. A man curses and blasphemes while disputing with another man. Moses asks God what to do about it. God says that the whole community must stone him to death. "And the children of Israel did as the Lord and Moses commanded." 24:10-23
  17. Anyone who blasphemes or curses shall be stoned to death by the entire community. 24:16
  18. God tells the Israelites to make slaves out of their neighbors and their families. The "heathens" and "strangers" are to be their possessions forever. 25:44-46
  19. God tells the Israelites to "chase" their enemies and make them "fall before you by the sword." He figures five of the Israelites will be able to "chase" a hundred of their enemies, and a hundred will be able to "put ten thousand to flight." 26:7-8
  20. God describes the torments that he has planned for those who displease him. The usual stuff: plagues, burning fevers that will consume the eyes, etc. but he reserves the worst for the little children. He says "ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it," "I will send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children," and "ye shall eat the flesh of your sons and daughters." 26:16-39
  21. All "devoted" things (both man and beast) "shall surely be put to death." 27:28-29
