What it meant, AP, was that the gov't had reason and recourse to recognize personal partnership for stability and cohesiveness.  I saw no reason that those personal partnerships should be limited to only "married" couples. We supported "Civil Unions" to replace marriage in legal and gov't matters and leave marriage to social/religious concerns.  It meant that civil unions would replace marriage for all.

When that failed to achieve equality for all unions, I started lobbying to get rid of all legal/gov't marriage privileges because they were not offered "equally".  That was a non-starter as everyone hated that idea, but it didn't seem fair to me that "some couples" got special gov't rights and others didn't.  I take a personal affront to Whonew's dismissal as I stood for eliminating this unfairness long before it was cool.  I took my lumps as a single man standing up for the rights of the non-traditional couples.
