California 134 57 July 10, 1913 Greenland Ranch -178
This interested me, because I've never heard of Greenland Ranch. I Googled it, and this [the Info Please Almanac] is the only place where the name is found. All the other reference books list this temperature--the highest ever recorded on Earth--and date in Death Valley. It doesn't really make much difference. I think Greenland Ranch might have been an old name for a tiny town now called Ranchita, Southwest of Death Valley, in the Anza-Borrego desert.
