The conservatives learn history as well, not just the liberals - and they learned from their experience at the turn of the last century when they ALMOST got a plutocracy established here what to do to avoid another swing and miss at that target. FIRST they began by starting the modern deregulation campaign with labor laws. ONLY the power of the federal government ever gave labor any clout, standing behind the organized workforce with real protections for the organizers and the workers enforced through the Labor Department and the Labor Board. These regulations went back to TR and FDR, and were swept away, leaving unions with almost no teeth and their membership started to decline. When the neoconservatives arose and got Bush 43 elected, folks openly hostile to labor were put in CHARGE of these departments, sealing their doom.

A deeply conservative Supreme Court finished the job, striking down precedent after precedent until the few statutes that remained were just hollowed-out shells. Companies have in recent years routinely fired any worker who tried to organize his co-workers and anyone who signed a card in DIRECT contradiction of the law which is the Labor Department's JOB to enforce on behalf of the workers. Know how many such suits against business they have filed since 2002? I bet you already got it. Zero. A law which is not enforced is no longer a law.

Employers will NOT hire Americans at higher wages so long as there are hardworking desperate illegals who will take them ... and there is no penalty to pay. That is why I say that we have to look at business FIRST and then the other side will largely take care of itself. If they can't work, they can't eat ... and they WILL go home overwhelmingly.

Americans are morons. We have no memory. We have no wisdom. We have no shame. We will continue to commit political, economic and social suicide until the last billionaire scoops up the last pittance of the last wages of the last line worker and locks the gate on us all. - California Jane
