The technique is known as "reductio ad absurdum".
reductio ad absurdum (r -d k t -o  d eb-s r dem, -z r -, -sh -o) noun plural reductiones ad absurdum (-o n z, -n s) Disproof of a proposition by showing the absurdity of its inevitable conclusion.
Let's try an actual TRANSLATION of that.  What "reductio ad absurdum" means is REDUCING TO THE ABSURD.  And as far as I'm concerned, if you can't find any way to argue someone else's point except to make it sound as absurd as possible, you can't refute it at all.

"Nope.  And that's why I think, along with not a few others, that all this NOMINATION and CONFIRMATION business should be done away with, and have Federal Judges and Supreme Court Justices be ELECTED to their positions.  And not FOR LIFE, either.

But hey, what the hell... that would take a Constitutional Amendment too, wouldn't it?" Treb

Dandy.
So rather than obey the law, you think we should just disregard the law, because Trebissky thinks he's got an idea that's better than the Constitution of the United States of America?
Now, if you REALLY want to play that REDUCING TO ABSURDITY game... I said, right up there, that we OUGHT TO amend the Constitution to eliminate all that nomination and appointment business.  Not that we should just start doing it that way because we feel like disregarding a damn thing.

But hey, if YOU really want to seem absurd, don't let me stop you.

"They don't have to GIVE a reason why they vote yea or nay.  All they have to do is VOTE." Treb

And you state the obvious in meager hope that it will make you appear wise? Better informed than ...?
Better informed than YOU, for one.  YOU, who keep insisting that any member of either house of Congress needs to give his or her reasons for ANY vote they make about anything.
