Here's someone I personally knew who in his last moments of life was thinking about someone other than himself.

Dave was a personal friend and a genuinely excellent individual. His thoughts were always for others.
He was a singer in our Christian Band a few years ago, a Deacon at church. He moved to Door County a few years ago.
The story, as it was told to me, was that their boat sank while they were 1/2 mile off shore and it was getting dark. They had no life vests in the boat. They swam for about 45 mins but the currents and waves made it difficult for them. At that point, the 13 year old had lost most of his energy and was in danger of drowning. Dave was also just about out of energy but instead of risking the 3 of them by making them all stay together, Dave asked his friend to concentrate on the 13 year old and get him to safety. Sadly, Dave drowned.
His last actions were for the safety of others above and beyond himself.
This is all just so sad.
