DALLAS - Police discovered another multi-million dollar marijuana crop during a routine helicopter patrol.
Authorities announced Sunday that they found thousands of plants in an isolated field along Interstate 20 near Highway 408.
The find was just one among several totaling about $10 million worth of marijuana authorities have found over an eight day period in which DEA agents and Dallas police have started to team up while working on a drug task force.
Police said they recently increased their surveillance for marijuana fields.
On July 21, police uncovered another isolated field near the Dallas-Grand Prairie line. Police said there were more than 10,000 plants, with an estimated worth of $5 million.
A smaller marijuana field was also discovered near the Drug Enforcement Agency's Dallas headquarters. Some of the plants found at that location were said to reach seven feet high.
"I think it shows they will go to any length in order to get their product out," said Sgt. Dudley Nosworthy, Dallas Police Department. "I also believe, it's probably less expensive because you don't have the long, large trafficking miles to haul it from South Texas or other parts of the world [to] get it into Texas. It's right here in out backyard."
Police are investigating who owns the property, and the marijuana is in an isolated area with hundreds of trees and no roads.
A Dallas policeman wearing full protective gear was overcome by heat and hospitalized after he hiked down to the marijuana on foot. Since officials said the terrain in the area makes for a challenging job, authorities said they will most likely remove the pot from helicopters Monday.
Police officials said by taking $10 million worth of marijuana off the streets of North Texas, they have cut supply, which will probably increase its price.
Authorities said they plan to hold a news conference Monday to talk about the latest discovery.
