From another forum, an interesting question about the effect of conscience laws that allow doctors and other medical professionals not to perform or prescribe things they do not believe in:
"Most chain drug stores have a policy that if one of their pharmacists refuses to fill a prescription on religious grounds, that pharmacist has to either turn the prescription over to another pharmacist on duty who WILL fill the prescription or refer it to another store (within the chain) who has a pharmacist who will fill the order.
Not a perfect solution, but I suppose it's the best they can come up with. I suppose it's against the law to require a pharmacist to go against his moral sensibilities.
But I wonder how far someone can take that? For instance, we all know that Scientologists are firmly against psychotropic drugs, so can a adherent of Scientology refuse to fill prescriptions for Prozak?
Can a PETA member who is adamantly opposed to eating animals, but works in a grocery store refuse to ring up meat for a customer?"
Interesting question. Given that our society tends always to take things to their logical extreme ... where might this wind up?
